S.O.A.P. is short for Scripture, Observation, Application, and Prayer. This is an easy to remember guide that you can use daily to help you get the most out of your personal devotion time.

Here’s what you’ll need:

  • Bible

Choose a Bible translation that is easy for you to understand. We are using the NASB as a church body to memorize scripture.

  • Journal & Pen

A journal is simply a notebook of your choice where you can write down what God shows you in His Word. Take notes on what He is saying to you and use it as a tool of reflection, for both now and later.

  • Bible Reading Plan

You can download the Davis St. Reading Plan here. We also offer the reading plan in bookmark form for free. Just stop by the Welcome Center to pick one up.

  • Separate Note Pad

It never fails. While you’re trying to focus on your personal devotion time, your list of reminders for the day will start creeping into your mind. Instead of letting them interrupt your time with God, jot them down and set them aside to come back to later.

  • Place & Time

Lastly, it’s helpful to set a specific time and place where you meet God each day. If you know when and where you plan to “meet God,” you are more likely to show up. He will certainly be there waiting for you.

Once you’re ready to get started, simply use the S.O.A.P. acrostic to go through your daily reading this way:

  • S for Scripture

Take time reading and allow God to speak to you. As you read, you’re going to notice that a certain verse(s) stands out to you. Highlight, underline or place a mark in the margin of your Bible next to that scripture(s). When you are done reading the entire passage, reread the verses you marked, and choose one that particularly spoke to you that day. Write it in your journal.

  • O for Observation

What do you think God is saying to you in this verse? Ask God to teach you and reveal Himself to you as you read. Paraphrase this scripture in your own words and write it down in your journal.

  • A for Application

Personalize what you have read by asking yourself how it applies to your life right now. Perhaps it is instruction, encouragement, revelation of a new promise, or corrections for a particular area of your life. Write down how this Scripture can apply to you today.

  • P for Prayer

Bring your devotional time to a close with prayer. This can be as simple as asking God to help you use this Scripture, or it may be a greater insight on what He may be revealing to you. Remember, prayer is a two-way conversation, so be sure to listen to what God has to say!

That’s it! S.O.A.P. It’s as simple or deep as you want it to be. A great way to continue growing in your walk with God is by taking what you learn in your devotion time and sharing it with others.
